TRAINING FUNDRAISER FOR TAYLOR THOMAS

 


Hello, my name is Dennis P. Thomas and the proud grandpa of Taylor Thomas. I am a semi-retired Building Official & Fire Marshal, still working to survive and I'm just trying to support my grandson, a great young man in a sport that he loves. I desperately need some help financially for Taylor's training costs. Caden Hadley of Next Level MX School has agreed to train Taylor and he's very much honored to be accepted into the program. Caden lived and trained with one of the great MX legends, Ryan Hughes of Ryno Power so it's a great opportunity for Taylor. Coming back off of a broken leg has been tough physically and mentally for him but if he can get the proper training for this great sport it will help him be a better rider and cut down on the risk of injury. I have helped with safety equipment, the bike, his gear, his tools, his entrance fees but I'm sincerely low on funds to help him in this training opportunity. IT’S ALL ABOUT ATTITUDE AND HEART 

If you’ve got a minute, let me tell you a story about Taylor Thomas, a young man and others like Taylor who have tried and failed but know that they are indeed, on the right path for future success in life.

Sometimes, no often times, life doesn’t follow the path of least resistance and success comes only after traveling on a bumpy road; ah, the bumpy road to success. 

Taylor Thomas is on that bumpy road. 

Taylor wasn’t born into a family of riches nor had everything just given to him. No, it’s been tough on this young man. 

Any young person who has had his parents go through a divorce can relate to what Taylor and his sister are going through. Nothing comes easy after that. It’s a struggle to balance two different homes, two different sets of parents, go to high school and all of its ups and downs and try to find a job that the employer will work with all of the ongoing scheduling changes. 

Ah, an average kid growing up in the struggling American Middle Class. 

Taylor loves most sports but fell in love with riding dirt bikes and participating in motocross but is struggling with financing his love. Participation in sports is a great way for all children to stay healthy. But it is a lot more than that. I believe that kids who have the opportunity to participate in sports do better in school, will want to stay in school which leads to better social skills such as decision making, better communicating, managing their time and team work. 

You don’t have to believe me. Research from many sources has shown that the skills, habits, friend connections and life experience that our children gain from participation have helped them gain important self-esteem and life resilience which most likely reduces the likelihood that they’ll engage in risky and dangerous behavior such as using drugs, missing school or simply getting into trouble. Extracurricular activities like motocross, scouting programs and others have been proven to help shape their future and isn’t that what we all want? 

Unfortunately, motocross has become a sport most poor middle class kids just don’t have access to. Nearly 1 in 5 lower to middle income parents have said that the costs have simply forced them to cut back or even eliminate extracurricular activity for their children. They cannot afford it! 

We all know for a fact that the families with higher incomes can financially support their kid’s sports and other activities. In today’s society sports for the youth in our great country are being controlled by income. More middle and lower income kids are quitting and not participating while compared to wealthier families which participation is rising. I guess we can say that there is becoming what has been called an “activity gap” that is contributing to a disadvantage with kids. We have to find a way to help all kids.

If you are reading this you already know the costs are skyrocketing. I’ve read that the typical family with kids who play any kind of sport spends around $700 a year on sign-up and playing fees, the equipment, traveling expenses and much more but we all know that some families who are playing accelerated sports and even sports like cheerleading can spend up and over 25-30 thousand dollars per year. Heaven-forbid if you are blessed with more than one kid that wants to play sports. 

Did you know that kids from better off families are being able to participate more than ever? Studies are showing that about 7 out of 10 kids from families that earn more than $100,000 are playing more sports. Now compare that with 3 out 10 kids from families earning less from middle to lower income. 

Yeah, we all know that youth sports have changed. In years passed, kids played as many sports as they could. Now the parents are pushing their kids into just one sport hoping that they can get an athletic scholarship. Pressure, pressure and more pressure on parents and the kids but the families are opening their wallets, checkbooks and using their credit cards and going deeper and deeper in debt for private lessons, sports camps, expensive accelerated club teams that travel for sporting events and tournaments and anything they can do that will give the kids an advantage. I know that we all are simply spending the money to help in their athletic abilities and that we love them. 

Can we all help to solve the problem? I believe that anyone in sports from administrators, coaches, leagues, camps need to find ways to get kids who want to play, who are able to play, regardless of income, to get the opportunity to participate. 

The reason for this GoFundMe page, https://gofund.me/3bcef17b is not to socialize the opportunities for young men like Taylor in order to participate but as a cry out for businesses, corporations and others to support the youth of this country. Fired CEOs are given hundreds of millions of dollars and enormous bonuses but many won’t donate to young men like my grandson, Taylor or youth sports groups because “It’s not in our budget” or “We have already allocated our funds for the year already”; really? I do want to give a big shout out and a huge thank you to all those great and I mean great companies, men and women that sponsor youth activity. Without your help there would even be a bigger problem.

Every dollar goes a long way. It’s all put back into keeping the bike running, paying for track fees, paying for gas for the bike, protective gear, etc., etc. You get the idea.

#ASV Clutch & Brake Levers

 I just finished up my 4 motos, two 250 class motos and two 450 class motos and feel like I need a lot more work on corners and also watching out for crashed riders on the track in front of me.  It was a wild and crazy day; that's for sure.  My first 250 moto was just plain weird!  Three of us was bunched together going into a far corner of the track.  Some new guy was running the water truck.  As we entered into the corner it was a complete mud puddle but the worse of it the water truck operator didn't see us because he was watering with traffic not against it so we were in his blind spot.  Evidently as we found out later was that the water throttle was stuck and he couldn't turn it off so he knocked us off our bikes into the mud puddle and kept spraying water on us as we layed there in the mud. We got back up covered with mud but when I got back to the trailer and washed the bike I noticed that the crash took a toll on the brake lever.  The stock Yamaha lever was cracked and bent down but I still could use the brake; at least until my last 250 race.  A rider crashed pretty hard in front of me and as I went over him I went down and the brake lever completely broke off.


It's pretty hard to race without a front brake lever so it ended my race which was my last race of the day.

I wanted to get some #ASV levers anyway.  I've put my application in for a sponsorship to help pay for new levers but haven't heard back from them yet.

So, my grandpa and I start searching for the new levers.  #ASV is backordered on everything for over 2 weeks.  I was wanting to pick up the C6 but no luck.  We called Rocky Mountain ATV and found the C6 in blue and placed the order.  They were in stock in Kentucky. Then the next day I got a call back from Marcie and she said their inventory was off and they didn't have the #ASV C-6 levers in stock.  Great, now what? I can't find levers! We asked what about the #ASV F-4? She checked inventory and said that they could FEDEX the clutch and lever because she found a pair in stock in Kentucky.  Have you ever noticed that Rocky Mountain hardly ever has inventory in Payson, Utah?  Anyway, placed the order and waiting for them to arrive to mount them on my bike.



They are going to look great on the Yamaha and #ASV is a great Made in America Company!
